It started when Kanjani8 did the skits at concerts. In celebration of their eighth anniversary, Eight Ranger get to be made as a movie.
In 2035, Eito City has advanced technology but the citizens are living in poverty. An ordinary guy gets scouted to join the Eight Ranger team.

The name is shortened for Papa wa Idol (My papa is an idol). Nishikido Ryou plays a character of himself in a fictional story. He is one of the members in an idol group called Kanjani8. In the story, he falls in love with a woman and marries her. She turns out to be a mother a three children. Since Ryou is an idol, his agency gives him two choices: Divorce her or retire from the entertainment agency.

For example, viewers requested them to find certain delicious food, good onsen, etc. Two of the members (usually. There are times where they have three.) goes to the requested place and do a documentary.
